BEAUFORT: The people need to follow the fine example of the late Jakim Kemin in welcoming Independence Day or Merdeka.

Umno Sipitang divisional chief Datuk Dr Kamarlin Ombi said despite not having any allocation from the government, Jakim and his family could still celebrate Merdeka in a meaningful way.

“Every year the late Jakim never failed to put up not only lots of Jalur Gemilang, but also flags from other States of Malaysia.

“Not only that. Now his children are following in their father’s footsteps by putting up hundreds of Jalur Gemilang along the 1km road between Lumadan, Beaufort and Sipitang,” he added.

He noted that there was no allocation from the government and the Jakim family are using their own money to put up the flags along the route and buying their own bamboo sticks to hoist the flags.

Dr Kamarlin was speaking when receiving a team from RTM Kuala Lumpur at the house of the late Jakim at Kampung Jaya Baru, Lumadan, recently.

Also present were the Native Chief and his deputy, the Village Headman, members of the Village Development and Security Committee and villagers.

“Jakim was born on August 31, 1925 and instilled the Merdeka spirit in his children and fellow villagers as an appreciation for Independence and the birth of Malaysia,” he said. Dr Kamarlin said Jakim was born even before World War II and experienced the cruelty of war and life during the occupation.

“Indeed, Jakim is a fine example for us. In his memory, let us continue to fly the Jalur Gemilang until September 16.

“The spirit shown by Jakim and his family can enliven the Merdeka mood and this spirit will be lost if we are colonised again,” he said.

He, therefore, urged the present generation to appreciate the sacrifices made by those before us and some of whom have left us.

“Today, we are able to enjoy the fruits of Independence due to the sacrifices of these early leaders,” he said.
