Community-based rehab centre for Tg Aru soon
Kota Kinabalu: A community-based rehabilitation centre will soon be set up in Tanjung Aru, said Welfare Department Assistant Director (Kota Kinabalu Division) Ahmad Awang Razalie @ Titus Selabin."We want the best for everyone as the current residence we have is not capable of accommodating everyone," he said, during the centre's Chinese New Year celebration as well as the handing of special allowances to the disabled on Friday.

He added that the building of a new centre depends on the number of disabled individuals in an area.

The centre at Likas currently has 145 registered disabled children in the care of nine staff. Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Edward Yong hoped there will also be an increase in the number of staff at the centre.

"I hope Razalie will help us in this matter for the benefit of all as we all understand that each of the children here needs special care and attention.

"I also hope that there will be a centre specially set up to accommodate disabled individuals above the age of 18 and cared for by specialists.

"This is to allow the disabled to learn and acquire skills for the benefit of their future because we must understand that their parents are not capable of taking care of them for the rest of their lives," he said, adding that they should also consider setting up community-based rehabilitation centres at other areas.

Earlier, Ahmad said that there are a total of 514 registered disabled individuals throughout the district and urged family members especially parents to get their disabled children registered.

"Registration is done via online and our KPI for this year is to achieve about 2, 000 registered members.

"The people should seize the opportunity offered by the various facilities from the government. There are a lot of activities organised and disabled children will be trained to work at private companies apart from being given incentives and allowances," he said.

"Those registered at the centre receive RM150 for their transport allowances," he said, adding that the allocation for the year 2014 was worth RM203, 600.
