Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Masters Athletics Association (Samas) has set a 50-gold target at the 32nd Malaysian International Open Masters Athletics Championships 2018 to be held from October 13-14 at Arena Stadium, Universiti Malaya. This was announced by Samas president Aliudin Jumaat during the flag handing over ceremony by MSN director Terrance Pudin representing Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Frankie Poon at the Ministry on Wednesday.Aliudin said the target is lower than they achieved last year where they won a total of 61 gold medals because of the absence of several potential winners in the team like Alfred Lajawa, Tay Yu Eng, Narul Andau and few others.

Despite the absence of the proven winners, the team can still rely on Asian gold winners Aliudin himself and Juliana Gumpil as well as Gilbert Divancy (70-74), Julius Komuning (70-74), Christina Labanjing (65-69), Lucy Yong (60-64), Erine Sinuel (50-54) and several others who were all winners at the recent Asia Pacific Masters Games in Penang. The 52-member-squad will leave for Kuala Lumpur tomorrow (Friday) and Aliudin also expressed his thanks to the Minister, the Ministry, Sabah Sports Board as well as MSN for their continued support to the association and vowed to give their best to achieve the target. - GL Oh
