Online gambling: Man fined RM1,600

Kota Kinabalu: A 59-year-old man was fined RM1,600 or a month's jail for engaging in an illegal gambling session in Luyang, last year.Unemployed Chang Fook Len pleaded guilty before Magistrate Afiq Agoes to committing the offence at 3pm on Dec 3, 2017 in a house at Taman Soon Kiong, Jalan Kolam.

The court heard that Chang was detained in a raid conducted by police who acted on a tip-off of online gambling activity in the premises.

Chang was charged under Section 6(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to six months jail or both on conviction.

Meanwhile, a 35-year-old jobless man claimed trial to threatening to hurt his wife with a knife.

Rahim Anni is accused of committing the crime against his 32-year-old wife at 11.30pm on June 24 this year in a squatter house at Kg Suang Parai in Manggatal.

The court fixed July 11 for case management and ordered Rahim be remanded further.

The charge under Section 506 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to two years or fine or both on conviction. Inspector Lim Swee Beng prosecuted. - Jo Ann Mool
