Sabah Pan Borneo compensation 4 times higher at RM1.147 billion

Kota Kinabalu: The Government has paid land and structure compensation totalling RM1.147 billion to involved owners as of April 1 this year for the Pan Borneo Highway project in Sabah, said Deputy Chief Minister and Public Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya.

This sum includes RM651 million in compensation to 1,591 land and structure owners up to 2019 for 12 work packages when the project was under the project delivery partner (PDP) system.

These packages include road upgrades and constructions such as Sindumin-Kampung Melalia, Kampung Melalia-Beaufort, Beaufort-Bongawan, Bongawan-Papar, Papar-Donggongon, Putatan-Inanam, Inanam-Sepanggar, Sepanggar-Berungis roundabout, Pituru-Rampayan Laut, Tawau-Semporna (Package 1 – Phase 2), Lahad Datu Bypass, and Kampung Lot M-Mile 32 Sandakan roads.

“The compensation in Sarawak is lower because in Sarawak, their existing road corridor is 100 metres wide,” he told Senallang Assemblyman Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal at the State Assembly sitting, Tuesday.

“While in Sabah, the existing corridor is only 30 metres wide.” He said the implementation of the Pan Borneo Highway in Sabah and Sarawak aims to upgrade the existing main Federal roads.

“However, given that the existing Federal roads are single-lane roads being upgraded to dual-lane roads, it involves acquiring wider land,” he said.

Shahelmey said compensation covers not just buying land but also compensating for affected houses or structures.

Shafie pointed out that Sarawak has not only paid less, but is far ahead in its Pan Borneo Highway, has also asked for the compensation packages in detail which Shahelmy said would be given to him in written form.
