Kota Kinabalu: The RM870,000 "deposit money" that allegedly went missing on nomination day, leaving 84 potential candidates from Usno Baru unable to contest in the GE14, did not exist, said Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Ramli Din.He said preliminary investigations revealed that the money was only said and promised by a party member.

"Nobody saw or received the money. The 38-year-old 'financial advisor' said to be involved has lodged a police report to deny that he had received the money," he said.

"It was also revealed that he is just a normal member and does not hold any position in the party," he told the media at IPK Kota Kinabalu headquarters, here, Wednesday.

Ramli said 10 witnesses, including the party's president, had been called to get their statements recorded and more will be called to facilitate investigations, adding that there were eight police reports on the case.

The case is being investigated under Section 408 of the Penal Code for breach of trust, which carries a jail term up to 14 years or whipping, or both, upon conviction.

It was recently reported that an Usno Baru member had lodged a police report claiming that 84 out of its 86 candidates were unable to contest in the election as their "financial advisor" had allegedly pocketed RM870,000.

The money was supposed to be used to register the party's candidates to contest all 60 state seats and 26 parliamentary seats, including the Federal Territory of Labuan.

According to the report, Usno Baru Sabah President Dulli Tiaseh had handed the money over to the "financial advisor" to register their candidates for the election. However, the "financial advisor" did not show up with the money when Dulli and the party's lawyer arrived at the Election Commission (EC) office, here.

Dulli and several of the party's candidates then went to meet him ("financial advisor") at his house in Kota Belud the following day, where they were promised the money evening that day. However, the "financial advisor" failed to show up again.

Due to this, only two of the party's candidates were able to register for the Merotai and Balung state seats but they had to pay out of their own pockets while the other 84 are unable to contest in the election. - Jegathisan Sivanesan
