Kuala Lumpur: Malaysian top golfer Gavin Kyle Green received a great piece of advice from golfing great Earnie Els, after displaying an uninspiring performance at the 2016 CIMB Classic golf tournament that is being held at TPC Kuala Lumpur here. The former world number one and four-time major winner's advice to him was to 'stay patient'.

In the third round of the 2016 CIMB Classic today, the young professional, who pushed way too hard, ended up carding three-over-par 75 to be tied in 72nd position with India's Gaganjeet Bhullar and Mark Hubbard of the United States with one-over-par 217, a drop of 24 rungs in the standings.

It was a big disappointment for Gavin to struggle the whole day after a fine run in the first two days with identical scores of one-under-par 71.

That was the moment when the 22-year-old received the golden piece of advice from the 47-year-old South African, who has won 19 PGA Tour titles throughout his career.

"Definitely I was trying to push a little bit too hard but I was trying to make a charge. When you over try it, this is what happens, it is a learning curve for me.

"Me and Ernie, we were talking about it. He said, kind of just stay patient...It is a big word for me to say, patient, it is a huge word. But to do it under these circumstances is huge.

"When you are playing bad and to stay patient, it is tough. But it is something that I have got to learn and I have just got to move on," Gavin told reporters afterwards.

Gavin started poorly with a bogey after tee off from the 10th hole, before repeating his mistake with a bogeys at the 13th and in his inward nine, he dropped a double bogey at the first and added another two bogeys at the sixth and ninth holes.

The Olympian managed to card birdies in the third, fifth and 16th holes to reduce the stroke deficit to remain as the best-placed of the two Malaysians in the field and gain his confidence for the last round, tomorrow.

"This course, if my driving is on and my putting is on tomorrow, I can go pretty low, you know, and 8-, 9-, 10-under is not away from me. I am capable, four par 5s I can reach, and tomorrow I feel like they are going to push up a couple tee boxes," he said.

Meanwhile Malaysia's highest-ranked golfer, Danny Chia, was unable to improve from the bottom of the 78-man field after carding another six-over par 78 today, for a 17-over-par 233 total.

Danny continued his poor run in the tournament after carding five-over-par 77 on the first day, followed by another awful display Friday with six-over-par 78. – Bernama
