Tuaran gets archery training centre

Kota Kinabalu: The Tuaran District Archery Training Centre under the Sabah Sports Council ‘Pelapis’ programme has been officially set up at SK Bantayan Tamparuli in Tuaran on March 27.

It is the second district centre launched by Sabah State Archery Association (PMNS) after Keningau and there are also two State training centres based in Tawau and Lahad Datu.

PMNS president Dzulkarnain Datuk Dzulkifli, who officiated the event, said the centre caters for athletes below 15-year-olds, and they will be trained to prepare for the National Pelapis Championship organised by the National Sports Council, and the Under-12 and Under-15 tournaments organised by National Archery Association Malaysia (NAAM).

“This programme will serve as a platform to develop the sport in the district from the grassroots level and it will indirectly help potential athletes to master their skills and develop to a higher level.

“As we all know our vision is to make Sabah a powerhouse in archery and to achieve that we intend to make the sport more popular in the State.

“We had in the past produced some great archers who did the State and country proud at to international and world stages.

“Among them are Fatin Nur Fatehah Mohd Saleh who won golds at the 2015 Archery World Cup in Shanghai and also at the SEA games, Lee Kin Lip who was a bronze medallist at the Asian Games and a gold medal winner in SEA Games, and more recently Otto Wong Co Wan who delivered a silver at the Vietnam SEA Games,” he said.

He added that Otto has also been appointed to lead the training team in the centre assisted by qualified level one coaches from the district and among them are Rizal Nasir, Rozy Bilmahruf, Lusrey Sikun and Qushairin Abdullah. 

Meanwhile, a total of 60 students from SK Bantayan, SK Rangalau Lama, SJK (C) Kok Wah Telibong, SK Togop, SK Agama Suria, Sri Al-Hafidz Tuaran, SMK Sri Nangka, SMK Sungai Damit and SMK Tamparuli took part in the opening ceremony.

Also present were Tuaran district education department deputy director Mohd Hanim Mohammad Goss, assistant officer in students development sector Ardi  Abdul Adis and SK Bantayan principal  Salgaring Wahit.
