Kundasang: Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam expressed full support for the upcoming Highland Safari “3rd High Altitude Offroad Challenge 2026, describing it as a platform to strengthen nature-based tourism, boost the local economy and promote Sabah’s scenic highlands to a wider audience.

Joachim, who is also Minister of Works and Utilities and Kundasang Assemblyman, will officiate the event from April 30 to May 3, here.

His support was conveyed during a courtesy visit by Organising Chairman Samsul Sinun to his office.

“Events like this add value to the local economy and at the same time introduce the district’s potential to investors and tourists.

Now in its third edition, the Highland Safari continues to grow in scale and appeal, with this year’s instalment set to be its most ambitious yet.

For the first time, the event will expand beyond the traditional four-wheel-drive (4x4) category to include motocross and all-terrain vehicle (ATV) segments, with all participants flagged off simultaneously at Pekan Kundasang on April 30.

Samsul said the response had been overwhelming, with organisers initially targeting 120 4x4 entries and 60 motocross/ATV participants. However, registrations have already exceeded expectations, with more than 120 4x4 vehicles and over 120 motocross/ATV entries confirmed to date.

“The event has also attracted international participation from Brunei and Indonesia, alongside competitors from across Sabah, further elevating its profile as a regional off-road highlight.

“The organising committee, co-chaired by the Ranau District Officer, has undertaken extensive preparations in collaboration with the Ranau District Office, the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) Ranau, and various local motorsport clubs, including KH4WDC, Kinabalu Red Army, KGR, RFWDA, KRS 4X4 Ranau, G6, Pinampadan Bengkel, Nosorob Garage, Naradau Motorsport Club and Tawakal Enduro.

“Preparations on the ground have reached 70 per cent, with expedition routes, competitor tracks and Enduro/ATV trails already identified.

Applications for safety and emergency response involving the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Civil Defence Force (APM), Rela and the Health Department are expected to be finalised soon to ensure readiness for any unforeseen incidents, such as accidents, natural disasters and communication challenges,” he said.

Despite the steady progress, Samsul acknowledged that staging an event in highland terrain presents significant challenges, particularly in terms of logistics for route scouting, financial constraints, and coordinating multiple clubs in both planning and execution.

This year’s route will differ from previous editions while remaining within the foothills of Mount Kinabalu. The special stage (SS) challenges for the “Hardcore Straight Axle” and “Supernovice” categories will be held near Kg Mesilou on both the opening day (April 30) and closing day (May 3), allowing easier access for the public to witness the competition.

Prize incentives for the “Supernovice” category have also been increased compared to last year.

“The expanded format, new routes, increased prize offerings, and strong participation make this year’s edition stand out from previous ones,” he said.

Members of the public are encouraged not to miss the annual event, which brings together participants from various districts in Sabah as well as international entrants.

In addition to the off-road action, visitors can enjoy the natural beauty of Kundasang and explore community-based tourism activities, as the event also aims to further promote Kundasang and Ranau as attractive tourism destinations.
