Kota Kinabalu: Singapore Airlines has been urged to resume its subsidiary SilkAir’s operations between Kota Kinabalu and Singapore.
This, said Airworld Travel Group chairman Dato’ Seri Winston Liaw, would allow Sabah to tap into high-value travellers from Europe heading to the Asia-Pacific region, including China, South Korea, Indochina, Japan, and Taiwan.
He made the remarks during a meeting with Singapore Airlines (Malaysia) general manager Christian Stenkewits at a hotel.
He added that SilkAir operates as a full-service low-cost carrier.
Since the US-Israeli conflict with Iran began, Singapore Airlines has increased its number of flights to cater to stranded passengers travelling between Southeast Asia and Europe during the Chinese New Year period, following numerous flight cancellations by Gulf carriers.
Liaw also noted that many airlines have imposed fuel surcharges following a surge in fuel prices stemming from the conflict, which is expected to affect sentiment in the travel industry.
He highlighted the impact on ticket prices, citing that a one-way economy class ticket between London and Kuala Lumpur can cost as much as RM15,000.
