Golden Bridge: A benchmark ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ project

IT is rated “the ultimate project” – even “the perfect project” – and widely regarded as the most promoted symbol of what can be achieved through Beauty with a Purpose.

Mrs Julia Morley, CEO of the Miss World Organisation, reportedly described it to contestants as “the benchmark Beauty with a Purpose project for any would-be Miss World,” referring to the Golden Bridge project led by Miss Indonesia 2014, Maria Rahajeng, who won the prestigious award at the Miss World Pageant that year.

Such is the project’s global recognition that Mrs Morley personally led a Miss World delegation to see the bridge firsthand in 2018.

The delegation included Miss World 2017 Manushi Chhillar (India); Liliana Tanoesedibjo, Chairwoman of Miss Indonesia; Annie Evans (Miss World Oceania); Magline Jeruto (Miss World Africa); Miss World 2016 Stephanie Del Valle; Stephanie Hill (Miss World Europe, England); and Andrea Meza (Miss World Americas, Mexico).

The Story Behind the Project

Maria Rahajeng recalled how the idea for the Golden Bridge began with a tragic encounter.

“I met a boy who had suffered serious leg injuries after falling from the old bridge while trying to get to school,” she said.

The Golden Bridge.

Boy who fell from twisted and wrecked suspension bridge and left limping for life.

The bridge, she explained, was a twisted, dangerous structure – yet it was the only link between two large villages.

“I wanted to help because without the bridge, it’s a 15km journey to school – a 30km walk every day for each child. And it’s not just the children; it’s the only viable access for hundreds of villagers.”

A Daily Ordeal

While children elsewhere travel safely to school, those in this region were forced to navigate treacherous terrain and cross a severely damaged bridge twice daily.

Some paid a heavy price.

The injured boy later recounted the moment that changed his life:

“I was walking home from school with friends when I slipped. The bridge tilted to one side. I tried to hold on, but my hand slipped and I fell. I broke my leg.”

He was left permanently crippled.

A Dangerous Lifeline

The suspension bridge stretched 100 metres across and stood 20 metres above the river below. It connected two villages in Lebak, Banten, Java – home to around 10,000 residents.

Without it, villagers faced a gruelling 5km detour just to reach essential destinations.

An alternative – a makeshift bamboo raft – posed its own dangers, especially during the flood season.

Building a Safer Future

The solution was clear: a new, stronger bridge.

“Children are among the most vulnerable members of society,” Maria said. “They deserve to live free from fear and danger. Their safety must be a collective responsibility – they are our future.”

Fundraising efforts drew support from MNC Group, the Miss Indonesia licence holder, social media campaigns, and individual donors.

With volunteers and local residents working hand in hand, construction began.

“The community’s enthusiasm amazed me,” Maria said. “Men, women, young and old – everyone took part.”

A Golden Pathway Forward

The completed bridge marked more than just infrastructure – it was a life-changing solution.

“This is what they have been waiting for,” Maria reflected. “All the hardships and obstacles have paid off when we see people reaching their destinations safely.”

She described the project as more than a bridge – it was an opportunity.

“Together, we have built a golden pathway to better education, better opportunities, and a better life.”
