The persistent problem of drink-driving continues to claim innocent lives and devastate families.
Despite existing laws and repeated awareness campaigns, tragedies caused by intoxicated drivers keep occurring.
Take stronger and more decisive action to send a clear and uncompromising message: drink-driving that results in death must carry mandatory imprisonment.
Driving under the influence is not an accident – it is a conscious and reckless decision. When a person chooses to drink and drive, they knowingly put other road users at risk.
When that decision results in the loss of an innocent life, it should be treated as a grave offence deserving firm and consistent punishment.
Mandatory imprisonment for such cases would:
- Serve as a strong deterrent – Knowing that jail time is unavoidable will make individuals think twice before getting behind the wheel while intoxicated.
- Ensure consistency in sentencing – Mandatory penalties remove wide disparities in punishment and reinforce the seriousness of the offence.
- Reflect the value of human life – The loss of innocent lives must be met with penalties that reflect the severity of the consequences.
- Promote responsible behaviour – Strong enforcement encourages the use of alternatives such as designated drivers, ride-hailing services, or public transport.
However, stricter penalties alone are not enough. A comprehensive approach is needed:
- Increased roadblocks and breathalyser enforcement
- Zero tolerance policy for repeat offenders
- Immediate licence suspension upon arrest
- Mandatory alcohol education and rehabilitation programmes
- Public awareness campaigns, especially during festive seasons
- Liability for establishments that knowingly allow intoxicated patrons to drive
No family should have to suffer the irreversible pain of losing a loved one due to someone else's irresponsible behaviour.
