Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Road Transport Department (JPJ) is carrying out special operations in conjunction with Aidilfitri from April 1 until April 20.

JPJ Sabah Director Mohd Harris Ali said the operation was aimed at ensuring the safety of public transport users and that bus operators comply with all the regulations.

“We carry out enforcement every day and if at the terminal, one of the JPJ’s focuses is to check the condition of buses, especially at the three main terminals in the State.

"This inspection will be done before the bus leaves the terminal and will be done in its entirety including mirrors, brakes, lights, bus permit and driver’s licence.

“At the same time, we are also working with the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) to ensure that bus drivers are free from the influence of drugs that can affect their driving.

“Similarly to the inspection of the logbook and the need to provide two drivers. If those conditions are not met, the bus concerned is prohibited from leaving the terminal,” he said during the Road Safety Campaign and Bus Inspection in conjunction with the 2024 Hari Raya Aidilfitri Celebration at the City Bus Terminal (North) Inanam, here, on Sunday.

Harris said so far no compounds had been issued at the three main terminals because JPJ is giving time to bus operators to correct conditions such as non-functioning lights and bald tyres.

“We are grateful to the bus companies for taking serious compliance with the rules and instructions issued by the Government.

“I request all bus operators to always remind the drivers to have enough rest and not be under pressure while driving,” he said.

He also informed that JPJ is providing 15 officers working as undercovers and board buses randomly according to the schedule.

“They will be on duty every day until April 20 and will monitor if the bus driver does not follow the rules such as smoking, driving wearing slippers or using the phone,” he added.

He said any complaints of violation of road rules could be forwarded to the MyJPJ portal.
