Lovelly eyes breaking into world’s top 50
Kuala Lumpur: National karate exponent Lovelly Anne Robberth will not rest on her laurels or be carried away with the two silver medals feat at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games but would rather work extra hard to climb up the world ranking.

The 20-year-old from Penampang, Sabah currently ranked 81st in the World Karate Federation (WKF) ranking list said her target or rather dream was to be among the top 50 in the world.

“Since karate is not part of the programme in the 2024 Paris Olympics, my focus and target is to improve on the world ranking. I must compete in a number of big tournaments to achieve my target,” she said when contacted on Monday.

The Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) student who is pursuing a Diploma in Physical Education however, acknowledged that she would not be able to achieve that target overnight but rather take more than a year and that she would not make any hasty decisions in pursuit of her dreams.

“It won’t be an easy task because this year there are only two major tournaments, namely the South East Asian Karate Federation (SEAKF) championships in Thailand this month and the Asian Karate Federation (AKF) championships in China  (September).

“However, that will not dampen my spirit and I want to continue focusing on winning and standing on the podium of tournaments that I participate,” she said.

At the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, Lovelly Anne produced a sensational performance to end the karate camp’s 13-year wait for a women medal winner in the sport after Lim Lee Lee had claimed a bronze medal at the 2010 edition in Guangzhou, China.

Lovelly Anne clinched the other silver from the women’s Team Kata with Naccy Nelly Evvaferra Rojin and Niathalia Sherawinnie Yampil.
