Quake: Sabahans in Taiwan are safe
Some Sabahan expatriates in Taiwan said they are safe after the 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit Taiwan’s eastern coast Wednesday, at 7:58am and the strongest in the city of Hualien.
Kota Kinabalu: Some Sabahan expatriates in Taiwan said they are safe after the 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit Taiwan’s eastern coast Wednesday, at 7:58am and the strongest in the city of Hualien.

“This is the strongest earthquake I have seen during my four years of studies here,” said Hiew Yi Ying, 24, student in Chef Professionals and Food Beverage.

Hiew, living in Yilan, northeastern of Taiwan, said she received the earthquake alert from the Taiwan Central Weather Administration (CWA) at 7:58am.

“A significant earthquake occurred in the Hualien area. Be careful not to shake strongly. Seek shelter nearby. Get down, protect and stabilize yourself,” said the SMS alert.

“Then I checked the application of the CWA and at 8:11am there was another alert of a smaller shake of 6.5 magnitude,” Hiew said.

Meanwhile in Keelung, northeastern of Taiwan, Charlize Tan, occupational therapist, 24, said the earthquake situation was more stable there.

“There are little things falling down, but people here in Keelung so far are mostly fine,” she said.

Carlson Chung, 27, quality management engineer also shared the encounter with Daily Express.

“Seconds after the CWA alert, the earthquake hit and it started shaking vigorously. The doors were banging, and everything just tumbled and fell,” he said.

Carlson said the Taiwanese government took immediate action once the event happened, which is very impressive on emergency management.

“Public transports were stopped immediately to wait until the earthquake was under control and had to conduct safety checks afterwards,” he added.
