PAPAR: The Papar District Disaster Management Committee (JPBD) will ensure that residents in the district continue to enjoy water supply ahead of Aidilfitri, said its Chairman Mohd Fuad Abdullah.

He said as the district is currently being hit by a drought disaster, the committee distributed between 500,000 and 1 million litres of water daily to the people affected by the disaster, to ensure that the people obtained an adequate water supply.

He added that the Kogopon Water Treatment Plant (LRA) supplies 40 million litres of water per day (MLD).

However, the Jentama LRA can only produce up to eight million MLD from a capacity of 10 million MLD and the  Emergency Water Supply Scheme (EWSS) LRA in Limbahau with a capacity of 10 MLD is still not operating.

These two LRAs are facing the issue of water sources due to the high level of salinity at the intake causing the water to be unable to be processed.

There has been rain recently but only for about an hour, we need about six hours of heavy rain upstream to bring the salinity down and the water supply to full level.

“As Aidilfitri is just around the corner, we will make sure the residents can enjoy adequate water supply,” he said at the press conference on the development of the drought situation in Papar district, Thursday.

On March 13, Mohd Fuad who is also the Papar District Officer, declared the district a drought disaster area following the water supply crisis.

Mohd Fuad said nine static tanks with a capacity of 10,000 litres each have been placed in the affected areas in the district, and the water was being supplied to the static tanks daily to ensure residents obtain an adequate supply.

He also hoped the cloud seeding operation to continue to induce more rainfall and increase the level of water supply in the district.
