Man ordered to enter defence over cannabis

Kota Kinabalu: A 26-year-old man who was charged with trafficking 200.08gm of cannabis was ordered to enter his defence.
High Court Judicial Commissioner Datuk Faridz Gohim Abdullah made the order against Dick Lai Cheng Kaai, Monday.

Faridz in delivering his ruling, held that he was satisfied that the prosecution had made out prima facie case against Lai.
The court fixed June 27- 28 for Lai’s defence.
Lai, a leaflets distributor, allegedly trafficked the drug at 11.45am at the edge of the Comi Comi Hamburger Sandwich Shop, Block D of Bundusan Commercial Centre 2, Penampang.
He had on Sept 22, 2020 pleaded not guilty to the under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death sentence or imprisonment for life and whipping not less than 15 strokes if not sentenced to death, on conviction.

The prosecution had called six witnesses during the trial.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Afiq Agoes prosecuted while Lai was represented by counsel Azhier Farhan Arisin.

In another case, an entertainment outlet owner was fined RM3,000 or two months jail by the Magistrate’s Court here for operating without a licence.
Chong Jia Yung pleaded guilty before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to committing the offence at the Vodena Kuca, Bundusan Square in Penampang at 12.10am on Feb 15.
According to the prosecution, a police team raided the place and found it did not have a licence.
Chong was charged under Section 3 of the Public Entertainment Ordinance 1958 which provides for a fine of up to RM50,000 or up to a year’s jail or both, on conviction.
