Kota Kinabalu: The practice of employers/recruitment and employment agencies/unauthorised individuals confiscating passports of Filipino Overseas Workers (OFW) in Malaysia is coming to an end with the passing of the New Philippine Passport Act, recently.

The recent signing of the Republic Act (RA) 11983, more commonly known as the New Philippine Passport Act, has sent a clear warning to potential offenders worldwide.

The Act, which replaces the previous RA 8239 or the Philippine Passport Act of 1996, stipulates severe penalties for offences related to passport misuse, forgery and discriminatory practices in passport issuance.

In numerous occasions, several OFWs in Sabah complained that their local employers/recruitment and employment agencies will normally confiscate their passports.

The most common reason is protection on the part of the employers and service providers.
