Expedite upgrade of Sandakan hospital: MP
“We need more specialists, especially cardiologists, as all cardiovascular patients from this district are now referred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu, which is over 400km away,” Vivian said.
Kuala Lumpur: Sandakan Member of Parliament Vivian Wong hopes the Health Ministry will expedite the upgrade of Sandakan’s Duchess of Kent Hospital (HDOK) under the 12th Malaysia Plan, which calls for the hospital to become Sabah’s major specialist hospital.

“Despite the fact that Sandakan’s population has grown dramatically over the last two decades, the HDOK remains the only public hospital in the area. Since the completion of the new block in 2007, the hospital has maintained a bed capacity of 400.

“We need more specialists, especially cardiologists, as all cardiovascular patients from this district are now referred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu, which is over 400km away,” she said.

She inquired the status of the HDOK upgrading work thus far and whether there is a timetable set by the Ministry for upgrading the hospital in stages.

Vivian also suggested that leaders focus more on the economy and policies rather than politics.

People are concerned about their livelihoods and hope all politicians will serve the country rather than themselves.

“Malaysia’s economy and economic growth must be the main focus for the next few years because this will be the only way to bring the country out of various current crises such as the global economic recession, the increase in the cost of living, the depreciation of the Ringgit, health care issues as well as housing issues,” she said.
