PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal has fixed July 18 to hear the final appeal of former Sabah infrastructure development minister Peter Anthony who was convicted for forgery.

Deputy public prosecutor Haresh Prakash Somiah said the date was fixed today following case management before deputy registrar Noor Firdaus Rosli.

However, he said Peter’s lawyers had indicated that they would be filing representations to the Attorney-General’s Chambers in the matter.

“Another case management will be held on July 4 to update the court on the status of the representations. The appeal will proceed on July 18 if the representations are unfavourable,” he told FMT.

Lawyer Nadia Farihah Norzuhaimi appeared for Peter.

Peter, 53, the managing director of Syarikat Asli Jati at the time, was convicted by the Kuala Lumpur sessions court for forging a letter from the office of the Universiti Malaysia Sabah vice-chancellor dated June 9, 2014, by inserting a false statement, intending to use it for fraudulent purposes.

Sessions court judge Azura Alwi convicted Peter of the offence which took place at the office of the principal private secretary to then-prime minister Najib Razak at Perdana Putra in Putrajaya between June 13 and Aug 21, 2014.

On May 26, 2022, Azura sentenced Peter to three years’ jail and fined him RM50,000, which he has paid.

The Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat president and Melalap assemblyman’s conviction and sentence were both affirmed by the High Court on appeal.
