SIPITANG: Don’t be sorry if the Sipitang tourism industry gets taken over by outsiders, said Sindumin Assemblyman Datuk Dr Yusoff Yaacob.

He suggested the Sipitang Tourism Association (STA) and Community-Based Tourism (CoBT) players be more proactive in providing products and services to welcome the influx of tourists post-Covid.

The Qhazanah Sabah Berhad Chairman said this includes running homestays, restaurants and others to highlight the district’s uniqueness.

“Sipitang, in particular, will also receive a population increase from petroleum companies that have already begun operating at Sogip.”

He said this while attending as a special guest for the Sipitang District Tourism Entrepreneurs Meeting and Management Course at PEDi E-Desa in Kg Pelakat.

“Tourists from Brunei are also increasing. If we are not ready to accept their presence then we will miss the opportunities and will be taken over by outsiders,” he added.

Dr Yusoff also invited officials from Malaysian Cooperative Commission (SKM) to provide briefing on the establishment of a cooperative for Sipitang’s CoBT.

In his speech he said that he highly encouraged the Sipitang CoBT to establish cooperatives because there are too many benefits that will be obtained as members including financial aid and so on.

“I also suggest that all Sipitang CoBTs are administered under the cooperative patronised by the STA Sipitang for more systematic monitoring,” he said, hoping the plan will be successful and leave a positive impact on the district’s economy.

Also present were Assistant Director of the Malaysian Cooperative Commission, Sufian Nanta, Chairman of the Sipitang Tourism Association, Jul Arsha and District Officer Nurfasiha Masri.
