SANDAKAN: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDN) Sandakan branch confirmed that the supply of controlled goods, such as subsidised sugar and cooking oil, is sufficient and that there are no unusual purchases by consumers.

KPDN Chief Enforcement Officer, Azdy Zukkry John, said they conducted inspections on controlled goods, particularly sugar and subsidised cooking oil, at the level of manufacturers (repackers), wholesalers, and retailers around the main consumer focus areas on Feb 27.

“During an inspection at one of the wholesale companies, it was found that the wholesaler had received a supply of 84 metric tonnes of sugar and is expected to receive another 48 metric tonnes on Feb 28.

“Further inspection of the supply of subsidised cooking oil in one of the district’s consumer-focused supermarkets revealed that there was a supply of subsidised cooking oil amounting to 3,568 metric tonnes.

“The results of the inspection indicated that the supply of controlled goods, namely subsidised sugar and cooking oil, was sufficient, and there were no unusual purchases by consumers,” he said.

Azdy said his team took initiatives and proactive actions by continuously monitoring and inspecting the status of the supply of essential goods in the district.

“This is due to the upcoming month of Ramadan and Hari Raya Aidilfitri,” said Azdy.

Azdy said the Price Monitoring Officer, responsible for monitoring the prices of goods daily in two wet markets, four hypermarkets, three supermarkets and a grocery store in the district, reported no instances of panic buying at the premises involved so far.

KPDN also appointed 33 dedicated district retailers (DDR) and five dedicated district wholesalers (DDW) for the purpose of monitoring the supply of basic necessities.

The supply status of basic necessities in these branches will serve as a benchmark, covering the regions of Sandakan, Kinabatangan, Telupid, Beluran, Sapi Nangoh and Paitan.

KPDN also took the initiative to create mini-stocks of subsidised sugar and cooking oil at every sugar wholesaler and manufacturer of subsidised cooking oil to ensure a continuous supply of these two controlled items, especially for consumers.

From January until now, KPDN conducted inspections on 1,400 business premises covering urban and rural areas.

A total of 25 cases were recorded, with confiscated items valued at RM205,288.15.

The total compound payment amounted to RM3,100.

On user complaints, a total of 26 complaints were received since January, of which 22 had been resolved.

The remaining four complaints are currently under investigation.
