Kota Kinabalu: A total of 28 sports are set to be staged in the next Sabah Games in Tawau in 2025.

It was announced by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ellron Angin during  a press conference at the 10th Sabah Games media centre in Wisma Muis on Friday.

He said the technical and competition committee will introduce the 28 types of core sports as compared to only 22 competed this year, and in addition scoring system will also be used fully for boxing, silat, and karate.

The minister also singled out Kunak district as the most improved team this year by winning four gold medals to break their medal drought in the games history.

He also praised Kuala Penyu, Tuaran together with Kunak for their much improved performance in the biennial games and commented on Kuala Penyu athletes who managed to break two records in the men’s 400m and the 4 x 400m relay.

He was, however, disappointed with the withdrawal of 289 athletes from 10 sports this year.

He also called to review the selection process and eligibility of athletes for future Sabah Games to ensure the standard remains high.

Also present at the press conference were Youth and Sports Ministry permanent secretary Datuk Mansur Asun, Sabah Sports Council director Asneh Mohd Noor, Sabah Sports Board general manager Terrance Pudin and Sabah Sports Council chief assistant director Heirwan Shah Masari.
