Sabah Games - Another record-breaking day

Kota Kinabalu: It was a remarkable day for athletics in the 10th Sabah Games as six more meet records tumbled at the Tuaran Sports Complex on Thursday.

Keningau’s Hizillawanty Jamain set the ball rolling in the opening morning event in the women’s 1,500m event when she crossed the finishing line in four minutes 59.81 seconds to better Pitas’ Marlin Hing William ‘s previous record of 5:10.59s set in 2017.

In second place was Nur Denisha Shazliatie Abdullah (5:27.57s) from Kalabakan and Kota Kinabalu Nur Syifa Raisha Adnan Firdaus (5:35.25s) finished third.

Lahad Datu’s Nikos Tail Lee Onn followed suit to set the second record in the men’s 1,500m with his time of 4:17.12s erasing Kota Kinabalu’s Romieo Gomboh’s 2019 record of 4:17.70s.

Putatan’s Muhd Naque Misnan (4:26.86s) came home in second place followed by Beaufort’s Mohd Ahsan Atta Ur Rahman (4:28.41s) in third.

The 12-year-old record of 49.58s in the men’s 400m set by Keningau’s Anchois Aron was also broken by Kuala Penyu’s Muhd Khalil Helmi who ran a 48.70s to take the gold ahead of Keningau’s Aubrey Aron (50.94s) and Kalabakan’s Muhd Firdaus Darus Salam (51.06s).

Another new record in the morning session was set in the men’s shot put where Kunak’s Pang Hong Seng rewrote the old record of 13.35m by Tawau’s Mirach Han in 2019 with a new distance of 13.55m.

Penampang’s Natahniel Majid (13.40m) who also bettered the record came in second followed by Keningau’s Victer Ben Salleh@ Bindik (11.55m).

Two more records were shattered in the afternoon session. 

Kudat’s Abby Allysca Lausin leapt to a new distance of 11.72m to take the women’s triple jump gold while Kota Marudu’s Dayang Shari Uluk (11.53m) and Kudat’s Carefina Dian Eldy (11.49m) also managed to break the 2015 record of 11.31m set by Ranau’s Jatifah Gesikin.

The track and field event ended with Sandakan’s 4x400m men quartet of Dexter Palmin/Muhd Fahami Samsudin/Mukhriz Ameer Izzuddin Abd Rauf/Pengiran Aidil Auf Hajam @ Pg Roslie smashing the previous record of 3 minutes 26.02 seconds by Keningau in 2011 with a new time of 3:25.92s.

In second place were Penampang (3:28.35s - William Walter/Mohd Razy Hafizul Mohamad/Mohd Razhafiefie Haqeem Razelie/ Edrick Feivel Florentiius) followed by Kalabakan (3:30.43s - Akmal Rizal Andy Remy Ihsan/Muhd Firdaus Darus Salam/Kashmeer Samsuri/Airiel Amani Kahar).

A total of 16 finals were held on the final day of the track and field event.

Other winners in the men’s category were: Triple jump - Mark Paladius (Tambunan -13.91m), Eljoe Gotuoh (Tuaran - 13.73m), Cisse Paul (Tongod - 13.64m); 200m - Dexter Bedie (Tambunan - 22.09s), Edrick Feivel Florentius (Penampang - 22.34s), Mohd Arief Aiman (Lahad Datu - 22.43s); Javelin -Mohd Hisyam Abd Razak (Kunak - 53.02m), Erickson Jackson (Ranau - 49.31m), Mohd Haiqal Jamal (Kinabatangan - 47.65m); 3,000m steeplechase - Muhd Naque Misnan (Putatan - 10:44.92s), Muhd Dzulfikri Matin (Kota Kinabalu - 10:55.05s), Harry Kewel Libin (Keningau - 11:05.58s).

The other women winners were: Javelin - Maryjane Juberin (Keningau - 37.00m), Connila Baniau (Ranau - 31.64m), Asprillia Johnny (Lahad Datu - 30.65m); 400m - Priscellona Grace Kifli@Hailary (Sipitang - 60.01s), Siti Nur Nadiah Mohd Din (Keningau - 62.31s),  Joeiviviean Jamson (Tuaran - 63.01s);  200m - Esther Joanne Ailos (Tuaran - 26.64s), Shayna Heather Tahing (Penampang - 27.12s), Siti Nur Nadiah Mohd Din (Keningau - 27.52s); Shotput - Ellyvia Kinol (Ranau - 10.19m), Norhafikah (Ranau - 9.80m), Siti Aishah Arifiana Asmat (Papar - 9.09m);  3,000m steeplechase - Ledia Engku (Ranau - 13:26.61s), Adella Dhaniya Muhd Adam Danial (Penampang - 13:53.47s), Amanda Mousin (Tuaran - 14:15.68s);   4 x 400m relays -Tuaran (4:15.61s - Joeiviviean Jamson/Esther Joanne Ailos/Junily Beatly Baking/Nia Joic Suan), Keningau (4:18.55s - Marlencia Unnis/Siti Nur Nadiah Mohd Din/Marysyenntikah Risah/Hizillawanty Jamain) and Ranau (4:19.27s - Zirah Albert/Shakira Natashya/Natasya Aleya Hyendy/Veeronica Seibit).

Meanwhile, Kota Kinabalu continued to lead the table standing going into the final day with 16 golds, eight silvers and 21 bronzes.

Keningau has overtaken Sandakan in second spot with 10 golds, seven silvers and 21 bronzes while Sandakan are now in third place with nine golds, six silvers and 20 bronzes.

The closing ceremony to be graced by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ellron Angin is scheduled to be held at the Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Stadium tonight (Friday) starting at 7pm.
