Tenom: The Sabah Bodybuilding Association hopes that bodybuilding can be listed in the Sabah Games (Saga) in future.

Its Honorary Advisor Clarence Runggi said more Sabahan bodybuilders could be featured for this event if it is listed in Saga.

“It is our direction and hope that this bodybuilding sport is included in Saga, this is our wish,” he said at a press conference on the 17th Master Borneo 2023 to be held here tomorrow (Friday).

He said the association will communicate with the Youth and Sports Ministry to get views and seek approval because this association is under the Ministry.

He said bodybuilding was only contested at the SEA Games and Malaysian Games (Sukma).

Meanwhile, Clarence said that so far a total of 80 bodybuilders have registered including from Sarawak, Brunei Darussalam and also Kalimantan, Indonesia, to participate in the Master Borneo and it is expected that many more will register.

He said the association has allocated a total of RM50,000 for the entire cost of prizes for the championship.

Tenom District Officer Mas Syazwan Masood, who was also present at the press conference, welcomed all parties wanting to organise any programme or event in

Tenom in an effort to promote the district which has many tourist attractions and its own uniqueness in addition to increasing the income of traders and the local community.

“Tenom is always open to all wanting to organise any programme or event at state, national or international level,” he said, expressing his appreciation to the Sabah Bodybuilding Association for choosing Tenom as the host of the Master Borneo 2023.

“This championship is an added value for the presence of people from outside Sabah such as Labuan, Brunei Darussalam and Kalimantan, Indonesia, to come and watch this championship,” he said.

“Besides being able to watch the performances and actions of the participants during this first ever championship held in this district, it also contributed to the source of income for traders including hotel and homestay operators around this town,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Tenom Sabah Games (Saga) contingent is targeting 15 gold medals at the 10th edition of the games which will take place from December 16 to 22.

Mas Syazwan said at the Saga 2019 in Keningau, the Tenom contingent was ranked 10th with a total of five golds, five silvers and 10 bronzes.

“We are very confident that this year we can achieve the target of at least 15 gold medals for the 10 types of sports contested by the Tenom contingent,” he told the media after handing over the team uniforms of the Tenom contingent to the team managers of the Tenom Saga 2023 contingent at the District Office here Tuesday.

Mas Syazwan also reminded the Tenom athletes to compete to the best of their ability and safeguard the image of the district because they brought the great name of the distinguished warrior Kalawon Antanom during this tournament.

This 10th edition of Saga would see a gathering of 6,784 athletes and officials, 22 types of sports events, 103 men’s categories and 75 women’s events and four mixed events offering 182 gold, 182 silver and 262 bronze medals.
