Kota Kinabalu: The Safa (Sabah Football Association) Cup 2024 football tournament is scheduled to start in January next year.

The annual tournament organised by Safa Local Tournament Committee will begin in the six zones comprising 21 districts from January 12-14.

Apart  from trophies, medals and balls, the winning prize money is RM15,000 for the champion, RM10,000 for the runners-up, third place winner will receive RM7,500 and RM5,000 for fourth place.

Committee   Chairman Datuk Seri Ruddy Awah, who is also Safa vice president, said on Saturday that the tournament  would e held as a carnival in the zone level.

According to him, two teams will get to represent each zone to compete in the state level finals to be held  in Kota Kinabalu from January 25-27. The 12 teams  who made it to the finals will then be divided into two groups and the top two teams will progress to the semi-finals.

Tournament venues to be used are Likas Stadium, UMS Sports Complex, Likas Sukma fields and Likas synthetic pitch.

Ruddy added that the main aim of the tournament is to unearth young talents to be drafted into the state teams in the future.

He was also pleased to see the presence of 21 districts’ representatives at a meeting to discuss the tournament chaired by him on Saturday.

“I believe all the presidents present here today are all very experienced and able to help produce quality players from their respective districts,” he said.

Meanwhile, Safa  president Datuk Shahelmey Yahya was represented by deputy president Datuk Awang Kadin Tang to give away football jerseys to all the districts’ representatives  at a brief ceremony held after the meeting.
