Kota Kinabalu: The hotel industry has demonstrated unwavering resilience and adaptability in the face of unprecedented challenges.

“Today, as we shed light on the path to recovery and the steps hotels have taken to rebuild and thrive once again, we find inspiration in the journey of this industry,” said Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew at the launch of the Sabah Hospitality Fiesta 2023 held at the Sabah International Convention Centre from Nov 4 to 5.

The effects of Covid-19 were felt across the globe, forcing hotels to close their doors temporarily and causing a significant decline in occupancy rates, she said.

“However, as we navigate through these challenging times, it is important to recognise that recovery will not happen overnight.

“Investors and industry experts have provided valuable insights into the recovery process.

“While luxury hotels may experience a slower recovery, economy hotels have demonstrated a faster return to pre-pandemic levels,” said Liew.

“In addition to economic factors, the safety and well-being of our guests have taken centre stage.

“The pandemic has heightened awareness around cleanliness and hygiene, and hotels have responded by implementing enhanced health and safety protocols,” she said.

Across the industry, hotels are taking extra steps to prioritise the safety and well-being of their guests, she said.

This includes the implementation of strict hygiene protocols, contactless procedures for check-ins and check-outs, as well as rigorous cleaning practices, she added.

These measures encompass deep cleaning of rooms, heightened disinfection of frequently touched surfaces, and the integration of technology to limit physical contact, she said.

“These enhanced safety measures have quickly become the standard practice in the hospitality industry, ensuring that guests feel secure and cared for during their stay,” she said.

“As we progress, it is vital to recognise that recovery involves more than merely reverting to pre-pandemic conditions; it also entails seizing new opportunities,” said Liew.

The hospitality sector is presented with a unique chance to envision and revolutionise itself, taking advantage of emerging trends and evolving guest demands, she said.

“By harnessing technology, committing to sustainable practices, and adapting to changing consumer preferences, we can shape the trajectory of the hospitality industry in a world post-pandemic,” said Liew.

She said the fiesta exemplifies their united resilience and determination in conquering obstacles.

It provides an avenue for exchanging expertise, cultivating partnerships, and motivating each other to forge a promising path for the hotel industry, she said.

Also present were Advisor of the Fiesta 2023 and Executive Chairman of ATI College Datuk Seri Wong Khen Thau, President of Malaysian of Association Hotels (Sabah) Chairman  Hafizan Wong and SICC Chief Executive Officer Datuk Rosmawati Lasuki.
