Kota Kinabalu: The State Government will continue to support the development of the film and television industry, said Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Dautk Phoong Jin Zhe.

He said films are not only an essential part of the cultural industry but also a driver for local cultural dissemination, economic growth and employment opportunities.

He said this after a meeting with local director Carter Chua (Katak) and film producer Lydia Goh which focused on in-depth discussions about the prospects of the film industry.

The meeting not only covered the progress and release of Carter’s latest film, 8 Ringgit Millionaire, but also the overall development status and future planning of the film and television industry in the State.

8 Ringgit Millionaire is a highly anticipated fantasy comedy film that tells the story of Lee Zhan Ming, a young man who grew up in poverty, dreaming of becoming a great painter.

However, his fate takes a dramatic turn after encountering a mysterious beggar and a magical wallet, leading to a luxurious life but also accompanied by tests and challenges.

Carter wrote the storyline during the lockdown period after losing a loved one, hoping to convey a positive message of perseverance and cherishing loved ones through this work.

“This meeting with the Minister is a very important opportunity for us to showcase the potential and direction of Sabah’s film industry.

“Sabah boasts rich cultural resources and magnificent natural landscapes, providing limitless inspiration and possibilities for filmmaking.

“Our goal is not only to create more splendid films with local characteristics, spreading Sabah’s stories worldwide, but also to build an ecosystem conducive to economic development through this industry.

“We are grateful for the Minister’s support and encouragement and will continue to work hard to bring more exciting film experiences to the audience,” he said.

Lydia said the meeting provided them a valuable opportunity to engage in in-depth communication with the Government’s high-level officials.

“We not only received the Minister’s attention and support but also felt the Government’s emphasis on the development of the film industry.

“We will inject even more enthusiasm into filmmaking and contribute to a brighter future for Sabah’s film industry,” she said.
