LAHAD DATU: United Sabah Islamic Association (Usia) Deputy President Abdul Hakim Gulam Hassan said all spheres of society are encouraged to work together to foster a sense of patriotism and love for the nation.

In order to keep the peace in the nation, he said, “We should all uphold the qualities of decent citizens, with noble character, discipline, mutual respect, and love for one other.”

According to Abdul Hakim, the nation’s society must constantly be united and work together to maintain its sovereignty. This can only be done if there is a strong sense of patriotism and love for the nation.

Abdul Hakim said, the spirit of patriotism and love of country is important for the society to always be united and join hands to defend the sovereignty of the country.

“This country was not built just like that, it was built from blood, sweat and tears. The fighters of our homeland risked their lives and many died against the colonialists to make us become a sovereign country. “After 65 years of independence, our country is now much better than before, with rapid development and a strong economy in guaranteeing the well-being of the people.

“Our society is also much more educated and more successful in the fields they engage in. Therefore, we should be grateful for living in an atmosphere of harmony and peace,” he said.

He said this while speaking at the opening ceremony of the National Month Celebration Programme and the Launching of the Jalur Gemilang Campaign, Sunday.

According to Abdul Hakim, the theme of this year’s independence celebration, namely “Keluarga Malaysia Teguh Bersama” is in line with the concept of the Malaysian Family which is a symbol and effort to form a multi-racial society that is open in celebrating differences and diversity for the sake of common progress and living in peaceful situation.

He said, the Malaysian family is like the family institution which consist of various religions, races, races and ages that play the role of preserving religion, protecting safety, safeguarding dignity and ensuring that the fate of each family member is protected.

“Unbeknownst to us, this concept is the basis for the establishment of Malaysia which, during the process of claiming independence, Tunku Abdul Rahman insisted that independence would only be achieved through cooperation and unity between races.

“Therefore, let us both plant and nurture the spirit of patriotism and love of country among all of us,” he said.

Abdul Hakim said, the Malaysian family should be strong together and united to maintain peace and harmony.

With this spirit, he said, we are able to defend our homeland from being harassed, invaded or even claimed by anyone. He also invited the people to fly the Jalur Gemilang in every house, shop, building, on every street, in every corner of the village and town as a sign of patriotism and love for the country.

At the event, Abdul Hakim also kicked-off the handing over of the Jalur Gemilang to the Community Development Leader (PPM) Segama, Mizma Appehdullah, PPM Tungku, Abdul Momen Angchai and PPM Silam, Abdul Rahim and department heads.

Abdul Hakim also did the flag-off for the Kembara Merdeka Keluarga Malaysia convoy at the Lahad Datu district-level.
