Banggi needs station: Firemen
KUDAT: District Fire and Rescue Department Zone Chief Sahidi Mahali has proposed the setting up of a fire station in Pulau Banggi, here.

This follows the complication faced by the department in carrying out operation on the island that requires sea transportation during fire incidents.

On Sunday, some 81 houses, including two belonging to teachers, along with a Toyota Hilux were destroyed in a fire that left 303 people homeless at Kampung Karakit, Pulau Banggi, here.

The operation was carried out by 15 personnel led by Station Chief Ishak Jabas who had to travel 40km on a Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency’s (MMEA) boat and arrived the scene 45 minutes later after being notified at 3.26pm.

Although there were no casualties, Sahidi hopes that there will be solutions such as the immediacy of setting up a team of fire and rescue volunteers or establishing the island’s own station.

Meanwhile, a family of six was left homeless after their house at Kampung Lubok Temiang, Labuan was razed, Monday morning.

Labuan Fire and Rescue Department Director Zainal Madasin said the 9am incident also destroyed two cars parked near the double – storey semi – wooden house.

He said the house was engulfed in flames when fire fighters arrived the scene and it was 95 per cent destroyed.

A woman who is the wife and her two-year-old child managed to escape the blaze while her husband and other children were away at work and school, respectively, he added.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated. In another incident, a house and four vehicles were destroyed in a fire that occurred at Kampung Marudu Darat, Kota Marudu on Monday night.

District Fire and Rescue Department Chief Rony Sikawan said six personnel led by Senior Officer Gabuh Maradan rushed to the scene after being alarmed at 8.30pm.

He said the team were able to control the situation by 9.11pm and proceeded with carrying out inspection in which the operation ended at 10.24pm.

No casualties were reported and the cause of fire as well as total loss are being investigated, he added. - Patimang Abdul Ghani  and Iffah Dilaney
