Eddy trained hard to achieve dream: Dad
Sandakan: The father of Asian Para Games 2018 gold medallist Eddy Bernard said that his son has diligently been training hard to achieve his dream."Eddy has continuously trained hard after his school session every day. He is very focused despite his disability," said Bernard Ingkiu, 47.

"A special needs child can be successful in anything they are involved in if they are exposed and given the opportunity similar to other normal children.

"Apart from Eddy's family, I believe his coaches played important roles in shaping Eddy to become what he is now," he said at the Sandakan Airport, yesterday.

The return of Eddy to Sandakan was welcomed by his family members and his school's coaches.

Eddy, 17, had made a golden debut in the Asian Para Games by winning the long jump T44 event at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, recently.

The Form Five student of SMK Beluran registered a personal best of 6.20m in his second jump before he bettered the mark with 6.30m in the fifth jump.

Eddy admitted that he was a bit nervous competing against the best in Asia as it was his first Asian Para Games.

"I felt nervous but stayed focus. I hoped that I can participate in the Tokyo Paralympics Games in 2020.

"However, as for now, I need to focus on my upcoming Sijil Peperiksaan Malaysia examination," he said. - Winnie Kasmir
