Sand from Malaysia arrives in Chennai

Selangor: Chennai has received 56,750-metric tonne of natural river sand imported from Malaysia on Sunday.The Hindu newspaper Monday reported that the first consignment from Malaysia arrived at the Kamarajar Port in Chennai early on the MV Aurelia. It was imported by the Public Works Department (PWD) on behalf of the Tamil Naidu state government.PWD officials said the sand imported from Malaysia would take a minimum 10 days to be available for sale, said theSun.

The PWD plans to deliver sand directly to the doorsteps of consumers in and around Chennai.Growing global demand for sand has led to sand smuggling with syndicates finding ways around the system to sell the valuable natural resource on the black market.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

Former Environment Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar had said last November that his ministry had issued approved permits (APs) to two companies to export sand to India.The APs were for the extraction of sand from Pahang and Kelantan. However, no licence was issued to sell sand to India.
