Dredging at Pegalan: Folks lodge report
Keningau: Four villages in Sook have lodged a complaint with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Putrajaya over the dredging of sandstone at Pegalan river by two companies in Kampung Kesugui here, which still continued. The four villages are Kampung Kesugui, Magatang, Ulu Penagatan and Penagatan Laut.

The Chairman of the Action Committee on behalf of the four villages, Rais Justih, said the letter dated July 9 was also copied to 15 State and Federal departments here, including the Village Development and Security Committee.

He said a copy was also given to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.

"JKKKs given copies of this letter were Kampung Magatang, Penagatan Ulu, Penagatan Laut and Kesugui.

"This protest is to about two quarry companies cooperating on dredging of sandstone at the banks of Pegalan river near Kampung Kesugui and until now the companies are still active in carrying out their works," he said.

Rais, representing padi field owners in the four villages, objected to the sandstone dredging activities as it would bring enormous threats to the padi fields of the four villages.

According to him, the two companies have dredged some large and deep pools at the bank of the Pegalan river which is near the Babangkalan river.

He said with a wide bank, flow of water will be diverted to the Babangkalan river and thus destroying the four villages of their rice fields due to the severe erosion.

"It will also result in severe damage to the irrigation of the padi fields as it is close to where the dredging activities are." - Johan Aziz
