World Cup betting ring busted, 9 held
Kota Kinabalu: Police busted a World Cup 2018 gambling syndicate and arrested nine suspected members in several raids in Penampang and Putatan. Sabah Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Omar Mammah said about RM100,000 cash was also seized in five "Ops Soga" raids on June 18, 19 and 20. He said the raids by a team were conducted at a car wash, a house, a shop and a billiard centre in Penampang as well as another house in Kampung Muhibah, Putatan.

Prior to the arrests and seizures, police had conducted surveillance for about a week and found the syndicate to be operating as a bookie for World Cup 2018 betting activities.

"The nine detained comprised seven local men aged between 22 and 35, a 37-year-old Indonesian man and a 20-year-old woman.

"Cash totalling RM98,653 as well as gambling paraphernalia, including 244 gambling papers, 19 mobile phones and a money counting machine, were also seized.

"All nine have been remanded for four days to facilitate investigations, except for the woman who was freed on police bail as she is pregnant," he told a press conference at IPD Penampang, here, Thursday.

The case is being investigated under Section 6(3) of the Betting Act 1953, which carries a fine of up to RM200,000 and a jail term of up to five years, on conviction.

Meanwhile, Omar warned that stern action will be taken against individuals or groups found to be involved in gambling activities. - Jegathisan Sivanesan
