BANGKOK: Malaysia's hopes of achieving their target of reaching the semi-finals of the Thomas Cup were dashed when they lost 3-1 to Indonesia in the quarterfinals on Thursday.Malaysia got off to a perfect start when, for the second day running, Datuk Lee Chong Wei proved what a great Thomas Cup skipper he is for Malaysia.

Chong Wei, who outplayed Denmark's World champion Viktor Axelsen Wednesday, defeated Indonesia's Anthony Ginting 21-19, 21-16 Thursday in 49 minutes in the first singles.

Chong Wei, at age 36, proved that he is again too wily for 21-year-old Anthony, having beaten the Indonesian last month in the Asian Championships.

Chong Wei told the New Straits Times that he went early on the attack to be on top of the game against Anthony.

Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo levelled the tie for Indonesia after the pair defeated Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong 21-19, 20-22, 21-13.

Jonatan Christie put Indonesia 2-1 up by beating Lee Zii Jia 21-15, 11-21, 21-13 in the second singles.

Indonesia sealed their berth in the semi-finals when Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto delivered the winning point beating Aaron Chia/Teo Ee Yi 21-18, 10-21, 21-9.

On Wednesday, Malaysia nearly pulled off an upset by pushing reigning champions Denmark all the way before losing 3-2 in their final Group D match.

Jan O Jorgensen delivered the winning point for the Danes when he overcame Iskandar Zulkarnain 16-21, 21-17 and 21-14 in the third singles.

Chong Wei had given a winning start for Malaysia when the 36-year-old defeated world number one Viktor Axelsen 21-9 and 21-19.

However, Denmark pulled level when Mads Conrad Petersen/Mads Pieler Kolding defeated Goh V Shem/ Tan Wei Kiong 22-24, 21-15 and 21-15 in the first doubles.

Tan Jii Zia then clinched Malaysia's second point when he downed Hans Kristian Solberg Vitthinghus 21-18 and 21-18 in the second singles only to see Mathias Boe/Mathias Christiansen check Malaysia again when they defeated Aaron Chiah/ Teo Ee Yio 21-19, 10-21 and 18-21 in the second doubles, causing the tie to go down to the wire which Malaysia ultimately lost.
