Chong to make int'l debut

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's Charlayne Chong will make her debut in the international golf scene with Team Southeast Asia (SEA) against hosts Philippines in the 2nd Pradera Verde Ladies Challenge to be held at Pradera Verde Golf and Country Club, Lubao, Pampanga from January 13-18.The 15-year-old younger sister of ex-Sukma gold medallist Albright Chong will team up with players from Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia in the four-ball, foursomes and singles Ryder Cup format competitions.Last year, Team SEA dominated the tie to runaway with a 19 ½-10 ½ victory.

She also attended the Sime Darby LPGA Development programme at TPC Golf Club, Kuala Lumpur at the end of last year.The competition in Philippines is timely for her as she needs more major and international exposure to boost her confidence. At the recent Faldo Series tournament in Johor, she couldn't cope with the pressure of being ahead of four other national players on the leader board, and subsequently collapsed in the following rounds. - GL Oh
