Labuan: Labuan International School (LIS) emerged as champion of the State-level National Robotic Competition (NRC) held at the Financial Park, Saturday.

The LIS Robotic Team B and Team A were champion and runner-up, respectively, in the Regular Pro Category of the NRC.

They defeated 13 other teams from four different primary schools on the island.

The National Robotic Competition has been organised by the Education Department and Sasbadi Sdn Bhd since 2005 for students aged seven to 18 years.

The aim is to increase primary school students' motivation to excel in Mathematics and Science and better prepare them for careers in Engineering, Computer Science and Education through hands-on learning experiences in building and programming robots.

The theme for the competition this year was Sustainable Tourism.

The champion LIS team consisted of Year Five students - Walid Tawasil, Aleeya Marissa Mohamad Syazwuan and Anjana Natalie Menon.

The runner-up team consisted of Jade Zhi Ping Langshaw (Year 5), Faris Hakim Mohd Shukri (Year 5) and Sultan Ghifari Wikramawardana (Year 4).

The two teams received medals, certificates and cash voucher of RM500 and RM400, respectively.

School principal Zainab Batin congratulated the students and teachers, Warnnie Musah and Rahim Shah, for their effort in training the teams for the competition.

The champion team will be competing at the National Level Robotic Competition (NROC 2017) in September. - Iffah Dilaney
