Solving the Death March route jigsaw
Kota Kinabalu: Many may find it hard to believe, but thanks to their longevity and by a stroke of sheer luck, we now have two people with still vivid memories of the infamous Sandakan-Ranau Death March of 1945 where 1,041 Aussie and British prisoners-of-war died and only six survived. Some 70 years after it happened, Daily Express managed to track down two Dusuns who were engaged by Japanese troops to clear a jungle trail for the marchers.

Their discovery could not have come at a more appropriate moment following a raging dispute between two Australian historians over the exact route the mid track section of the march took.

Dr Kevin Smith insists an alternate route went into Kg Miruru via the Liwagu Valley but famed author Lynette Silver dismissed that outright.

Both advanced what they believe to be unassailable evidence to support their positons and clung stubbornly to their respective contentions.

So, who was right? See pages 9 and 10 for the authoritative, objective verdict of these two living witnesses.
