Sandakan: Ten people believed to be from the Philippines were detained by marine police for several offences, including illegal entry and smuggling in turtle eggs. The 10 aged between 14 and 54, including three women, were nabbed during a three-day "Ops Pensura Khas" conducted in the Sandakan waters covering Kuala Sg Batu 2 and Kuala Sungai Batu 3 all the way to Laut Pamaguan, here.

The team also seized items worth RM40,500.

State Marine Police Commander ACP Mohamad Madun on Saturday said among the objectives of the operation were nabbing illegal immigrants, addressing smuggling activities and enforcing the prohibition on the use of pump boats in the State.

The operation was done as a follow-up to the Philippine government's use of military force on the Abu Sayyaf group in the belief that residents in the area would try to flee to Malaysia.

On that note, Mohamad said apart from scheduled operations, similar special operations would be continued from time to time to prevent crime in the Sandakan waters.
