City Hall's 'Litter-Free Run' April 17
Kota Kinabalu: City Hall will be organising its 'Litter Free City Run' or City Run Without Waste on April 17 in conjuction with the 16th city anniversary. According to Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai, the run organised by City Hall and City Hall Recreation and Welfare Club (Club REKA) will be flagged off at 7am at Padang Merdeka.

Among the objectives of the Litter Free City Run is to promote a healthy lifestyle and clean environment without waste, promote the Anti-Litterbug Campaign and also educate the public on waste management and bring society toward combating the litter bugs.

"This run also highlights three main messages in line with the Anti-Litter Campaign, namely do not throw garbage everywhere, if you see someone littering do chide them and lastly, if you see trash do pick it up.

"This is not a competition run but a discipline run to promote cleanliness. We will monitor the run to ensure cleanliness is maintained. Of course, we will also prepare a lot of rubbish bins which will be placed in strategic areas including the Deasoka plaza, the Sabah Tourism Board area and perhaps also near Sugarbun Gaya Street area."

Yeo said the run was also held in conjunction with the celebration of the 16th anniversary of Kota Kinabalu City.

'In addition, City Hall also wants to inculcate a love for Kota Kinabalu City and spirit of integration and a sense of belonging to maintain the cleanliness of the city."

According to Yeo, so far 1,200 participants have signed up although the target is 2,000 for the event, adding that perhaps more participants will turn up at the last minute before the launching of the event.

City Hall welcomes those who are interested to participate in the run, for which the entry fee is RM35 per person and participants will receive a t-shirt, e-certificates and lucky draw tickets.

For participants who register in groups of 30 people and above, the entry fee is RM30 per person.

For the first 450 participants who complete the run, medals will be awarded in accordance with the following breakdown: 250 male participants and 200 women who complete the run earliest.

The participants are expected to gather at Padang Merdeka at 6am and before the launching at 7am, aerobics will be held as a warm-up.

Yeo said the 7km run will start from Padang Merdeka-Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman–Jalan Menteri (Sacred Heart Cathedral, Museum of Islamic Civilization)-Jalan Kebajikan (SM St Francis Convent)- Jalan Sang Kancil-Jalan Tuaran (Overhead Karamunsing)–Karamunsing flyover–Jalan Istana and end back at Padang Merdeka. The run is expected to finish at 9am.

"In addition to running, participants will also be treated to a stage performance by busker groups. During the event, the organisers will also hold a blood donation campaign, an exhibition, a colouring contest for children and hawkers selling activities, other than lucky draw for the runners."

Yeo said he hoped the run will further enhance public awareness and change the mindset of society to jointly maintain the cleanliness of the city, in addition to spreading the message of the Anti-Litter Campaign to be internalised by every citizen of the city.

Yeo also took the opportunity to thank the run's sponsors who have contributed to the organisation of this event and also donated prizes for the lucky draw.

He said the sponsors include CH Retail (M) Sdn Bhd-Giant Hypermarket which is sponsoring 50 units of hamper worth RM50 each and 2,000 litres of mineral water for participants, Nestle Products Sdn Bhd sponsoring 20 hampers worth RM50 each, Regal Marketing & Trading Sdn Bhd sponsoring Indo Café/Vico drinks, Angkatan Hebat Sdn Bhd sponsoring 10 hampers worth RM100 each, Beras Corporation Sdn Bhd sponsoring 100 bags of 5kg rice, Kinabalu Sports and Souvenirs - RM500 cash contributions and Saujana Environmental with a cash contributions of RM1,000 and the run official radio, Kupikupifm for the contribution and support given.

"My deepest thanks also goes to the government departments and organisations that helped City Hall, such as the Ministry of Local Government and Housing, the State Health Department, RTM, Information Department, the Department of Youth and Sports (Federal), Public Works Department, the Police and the Youth Council Sabah."
