LAHAD DATU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (Maritime) on Tuesday foiled an attempt by a Filipino to smuggle subsidised items via Tanjung Labian waters.

Lahad Datu Maritime Zone Director, Commander Nik Mohd Rizam Nik Mohd Fauzi said, upon receiving a tip-off, Maritime spotted a suspicious boat without registration number at the southern area of Tanjung Labian lighthouse at about 4.27pm.

He said inspection on the boat found it has committed offences under the Control of Padi and Rice Act 1994, Customs Act 1967 and Control of Supplies Act 1961 as well as Immigration Act 1959/63.

“The boat’s crew, a 44-year-old man, was believed to be under drug influence based on his behaviour as well as the discovery of equipment used for taking drugs.

“We also seized 200kg of rice, 17kg cooking oil and a pump boat with two engines worth RM9,500,” he said, adding that the rice and cooking oil were believed to be smuggled out to the neighbouring country.

In the meantime, Nik Mohd Rizam urged members of the public to convey any information on suspicious activities to Lahad Datu Maritime to its operation centre at 089-885727 or MERS999.
