LAHAD DATU: The public is urged to immediately contact the Sabah Wildlife Department (SWD) if they encounter a herd of elephants or other wildlife.

District Wildlife Officer Sylvester Saimin said they should not take action on their own, such as attempting to drive away herds of elephants, to avoid untoward incidents.

“If you see or come into contact with a herd of elephants, immediately contact us and leave the area.

“Do not approach the elephants or take any action that could invite danger,” he said.

According to Sylvester, SWD received reports of a herd of elephants spotted in the Tengah Nipah area over the past few days.

He said SWD monitoring found the elephants were currently at Centawan Farm, about 6km from the Tabin Forest Reserve.

“We will continue to monitor the elephants until they return to their original habitat,” he said.

Previously, residents in the Tengah Nipah area shared photos and videos of a group of elephants at the area, including the Palm Oil Industrial Cluster (POIC).

The herd of elephants has been observed to be felling banana trees nearby but have not entered the road area.
