BEAUFORT: Skeletal remains, believed to be that of a human, were found in a room of an abandoned teachers’ quarters in Membakut, near here, on Wednesday.

The discovery was made around 9am by two workers who were assigned to clean the building, which was said to have been abandoned for the past five years.

Acting Beaufort District Police Chief ASP Weddrin Mojingkin said the skeleton was believed to be lying on its back and fully clothed.

“However, the body and the skull were found separated. Based on the condition of the body, the death could have occurred quite a long time ago,” he said, adding the place has been left empty for about five years.

Weddrin said a round-knotted white wire was found hanging above the fan in the room.

“Also found was a collapsed plastic chair near the body,” he said, adding the victim has yet to be identified.

Weddrin said all the bones were sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kota Kinabalu for post-mortem to identify the victim and the cause of death.

The case has been classified as sudden death.

Weddrin urged the public who have information about the incident or have lost family members to contact the Membakut police station directly to assist in the investigation.
