Teluk Intan: The driver of the car involved in the collision that killed three Pakistani men two days ago pleaded guilty to drug abuse in the magistrates’ court here today.

Restaurant worker Azizol Abd Rasheed, 36, made the plea after the charge was read before judge T Ashvinii.

He was accused of self-administering the dangerous drug tetrahydro-cannabinol at the narcotics crime investigation division of the Hilir Perak district police headquarters at 7.45pm on April 10.

Azizol was charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, read with Section 38B (1) of the same law, which provides for a maximum fine of RM5,000 or imprisonment of up to two years upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor R Rishan Kumar proposed bail of RM8,000, on condition that Azizol report to the nearest police station every month.

Rishan also informed the court that Azizol had been remanded until this Sunday to assist in the investigation under Section 44 (1)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer Faustina Francis, who represented Azizol, appealed for minimum bail, citing his role as the primary caregiver for his mother.

The judge then set bail of RM3,000 with two sureties, and told Azizol to report to the nearest police station every two weeks. Case mention and submission of the pathology report have been set for June 5.

Earlier in the same court, four Pakistani men, aged 24 to 49, believed to be involved in the assault of Azizol in a viral video clip, were remanded for four days until Monday.

The court granted the police’s request for a remand order to assist the investigation under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting.

On Wednesday, the media reported that three Pakistani men were killed while three others were severely injured after being struck by a car at KM16, Jalan Teluk Intan-Bidor.

Hilir Perak district police chief Ahmad Adnan Basri said the victims were en route to a nearby mosque to perform the Aidilfitri prayers when the collision occurred at 8.10am.

Yesterday, it was reported that the police had arrested four Pakistani men involved in the assault on the car driver.
