Meta, TikTok pledge online safety measures for children using social media: Fahmi

KUALA LUMPUR: Social media platform provider Meta and TikTok have pledged their commitment to ensure online safety measures for children below the age of 13.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said in the agreement achieved during a discussion today, other elements touched on involved the monitoring of contents related to crime, like online gambling, scam, fake news and 3R (Race, Religion, Royalty). 

“The two social media platform providers were also notified of the government’s plans for a better framework for laws involving online safety, policies and guidelines for social media platform operations in Malaysia.

“This is in line with the Madani Government’s commitment to ensure the rights of Malaysian to voice their concerns and ensure a productive, harmonious and safe use of Internet for all,” said Fahmi in a Facebook message. 

Fahmi had earlier informed that the Ministry of Communications, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) as well as several agencies would be meeting social media platform provider Meta today to discuss aspects of online safety.
