PETALING JAYA: Thirteen youths were charged at the Lahad Datu magistrates’ court today with killing a student at a vocational college last month.

Bernama reported that the youths, aged 16 to 19, were charged with killing Nazmie Aizzat Narul Azwan, 17, at the Lahad Datu Vocational College between 9pm on March 21 and 7.38am on March 22.

They were charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same code, which provides for the death sentence or imprisonment of not less than 30 years or more than 40, and no less than 12 strokes of the rotan.

No plea was recorded from the 13 accused during the closed-door proceedings before magistrate Nur Asyraf Zolhani, as murder cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

Only family members of the accused were allowed in the proceedings, which started at 9am, as the case involves juveniles.

The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor Ng Juhn Tao, while two of the accused were represented by lawyers Amirul Amin Rashid and Kamarudin Chinki. The other 11 were not represented.

The court set May 16 for remention of the case as it awaits the handover of the chemistry and autopsy reports.
