Kota Kinabalu: Hari Raya Aidilfitri provides an opportunity for people in the country to strengthen friendship and foster unity.

Sabah Head of State Tun Juhar Mahiruddin, in his Aidilfitri message, said the people of Sabah, in particular, need to strive for greater unity and put an end to divisions such as extreme fanaticism, whether from a religious or ethnic standpoint.

“The development of a nation will not be meaningful if the spirit of understanding, harmony and compromise in the lives of a multi-ethnic society is disregarded.

“The attitude of cherishing unity needs to be continuously nurtured and preserved so that all plans for development and policy implementations towards social balance can be successfully carried out.

“It would be a great loss if the decades we have lived together in peace suddenly vanish due to behaviours and provocative words that can trigger tensions among the people,” he said.

Apart from that, Juhar also called people to be mindful and practise moderation in observing upcoming Aidilfitri, especially during the uncertainty of the current global economy.

Besides expressing gratitude for the blessings of peace and harmony in community living, he said there is also a need to be vigilant and prepared for any eventualities that may occur in our State or country.

“This statement may seem cliché to those who are well-off and less affected by it.

“If we reflect on the purpose of observing fasting during the month of Ramadan, then surely we can also implement all religious requirements to choose a moderate approach in any situation.

“Avoid wastefulness, spend according to our financial capability, do not try to emulate others’ lifestyles, instead, tailor our expenses according to our own means,” he said.

Juhar also encourages Muslims to cultivate the practice of charity by assisting the needy and poor through financial assistance and daily necessities.

He also reminded people to appreciate the sacrifices of the security forces.

“We must appreciate and not forget the sacrifices made by various parties, especially in enabling Aidilfitri to be celebrated in a peaceful, tranquil, joyful and festive atmosphere, even in modest circumstances.

“While the majority of citizens are on holiday celebrating the festive season, there are those who remain committed to carrying out various important tasks and need to handle 24-hour services.

“May their sacrifices be accepted by Allah SWT as valuable righteous deeds in His sight,” he said.
