SANDAKAN: Sabah Barisan Nasional aims to win at least 23 State Legislative Assembly seats on the East Coast in the next state elections.

Sabah Umno leader Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin said this would be realised through a series of tours throughout Sabah and fielding candidates who are not disastrous.

“There are approximately 27 state assembly seats from Semporna to Kinabatangan, we aim to capture at least 23 seats.

“We will also examine the candidates who will be featured in the PRN later, and will definitely not contest disastrous candidates.

“We will make sure these candidates are liked by the people. However, it is impossible to highlight a candidate supported by all the people,” he said, after the Sabah Umno Ramadan Tour for Zone Five held at Batu 12, on Thursday.

Bung also reiterated that Sabah Umno would never cooperate with a party that had betrayed them.

“In Sabah, we will look for friends who can support us, who have loyalty and also transparency in the common struggle.

“Sabah Umno never cooperates with a party that has betrayed us, that wants to kill us. We will not be bitten twice by the same snake,” he said.

He said the response of the people to the events shows that the people are still with Sabah Umno.

In the Sabah Umno Ramadan Tour in Zone Five, a total of 200 underprivileged people, six mosques and four suraus received donations.

Elaborating, Bung said Umno Sabah’s three main criterion for candidates are winability, acceptability and likeability.

He said it is important to ensure that Barisan Nasional forms the next government.

“It is difficult to choose a candidate who is truly accepted by all levels of the people. However, the choice must be made taking into account the three factors.

“Additionally, the chosen candidate will be one who does not have any conflicts that could be harmful to the party.

“But just because you are not selected as a candidate, don’t join other parties or sabotage those selected, and so on.

“As fighters, our priority is the party and its victory,” he said urging members to keep an open mind in the selection process.

He said strengthening the party’s machinery is most important in preparing for the elections.

“I want the people in this state to give Umno and the BN coalition a chance to solve the water, road, electricity issues and the worsening economy.

“Umno and BN used to be the backbone of the state government for 24 years. Throughout that period, the infrastructure issues of clean water supply, roads and electricity supply were not as bad as they are today.

“Maybe the reason is due to the speed of development, increased needs or weather factors.

“But if the government has a more systematic plan and concrete actions, today’s situation will not put pressure on people’s lives,” he said.
