PETALING JAYA: MIC has called on the government to revoke the citizenship of a man who made derogatory remarks about Islam, Selangor’s Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah and the police force in a video.

MIC information chief R Thinalan said N Ganesparan’s actions and speech rendered him disloyal to the country, as laid out in the Federal Constitution.

“Individuals like Ganesparan pose a threat to the unity and harmony of the nation, capable of causing public unrest and inflaming religious sensitivities, leading to societal turmoil and ethnic divisions,” he said in a statement.

“Therefore, MIC urges the government to take immediate action to curb disloyal elements to our nation like Ganesparan from further threatening and undermining the harmony of our people and country.”

According to Article 25(1)(a) of the Federal Constitution, the government has the authority to revoke a person’s citizenship if he or she is disloyal or shows a lack of support for Malaysia through actions or words.

Yesterday, Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director Shuhaily Zain said Ganesparan had left the country in 2018, with no record of his return.

Shuhaily also said Ganesparan had a history of making offensive statements about the royal institution, religion and politics.

A total of 22 investigation papers on Ganesparan’s actions have been opened since he left the country in 2018.

“In 2021, the police charged Ganesparan in absentia for insulting the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the prime minister.

“The investigation will be intensified and brought to the attention of the Attorney-General’s Chambers for further instructions,” Shuhaily said.

The immigration department has also revoked Ganesparan’s passport following a previous request by the police, he added.
