Buying power, insolvency rate across income classes in Sabah
In Sabah, where income diversity varies from the Bottom 40 (B40 – less than RM 6,338) and middle 40 (M40 – RM6,339 to 10,959) to the Top 20 (T20 – more than RM10,960) income groups, purchasing power discrepancies are severe.
THE inter-relationship between purchasing power and the insolvency rate across different income classes has become a topic of great concern in Sabah, particularly as it pertains to urban poverty.

Urban regions frequently suffer the brunt of economic differences, due to the mixture of wealthy areas and underprivileged communities growing social and economic inequality.

The impact of this relationship is felt deeply within Sabah’s urban centres, where the disparity in purchasing power directly influences the insolvency rates among various income groups.

Purchasing power, or the ability to acquire goods and services for a given income (Modelling of Transport Demand, 2019), is an important indication of economic well-being.
